Markdown Content: The wonderful service, Read the Docs, supports integrations with EthicalAds, a reasonable way to include ads. As a maintainer, you can earn revenue from your project’s documentation that is hosted on Read the Docs via their EthicalAds network.
This is unlikely to generate a ton of revenue, but it is something. Since I configured the Django Debug Toolbar with EthicalAds in Jan 2025, the Django Debug Toolbar has generated $123.
That said, it’s possible that earning $5-10 a month isn’t worth the hassle. I totally get that.
But if that is you, or if you’re looking for something more community-focused, I have a better solution!
The Django Debug Toolbar and Django Commons have worked with Read the Docs to set up an account in which all the funds are directly transferred to the Django Software Foundation (DSF).
This means you don’t incur any taxes for accepting funds, and you’re benefiting the community.
If you have a semi-popular package (100+ stars, been around for a year), and you’d like to support Django, reach out to me. I’d love to help you configure your project to help fund the DSF!
What will happen is that Read the Docs will connect your account to a shared EthicalAds account that routes all funds to the DSF’s bank account. This account is shared and maintained by the Django Commons admin team. These account changes require communication with the Read the Docs/EthicalAds team, so you are able to remove your project at any point on your own.
If you have thoughts, comments, or questions, please let me know. You can set up a meeting with me, or find me on the Fediverse, Django Discord server, or use email.
